My Hair Transformation
Discovering the Secrets to Healthy, Manageable Hair
For many years, I was the girl who just didn’t really care about her hair. Embracing the carefree beachy waves, I let my hair do its thing without much interference. However, as time passed, I began to notice a decline in the appearance of my hair.
My once effortless waves were just a few steps away from dreadlocks, forming tangled knots that clumped together and seemed impossible to undo. Spending hours detangling my hair became a daily occurrence, leaving me wincing in pain each time. It got to the point where I pretty much gave up on my hair. I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong until I stumbled upon Taylor Rose, a Trichologist on TikTok, whose videos opened my eyes to everything I needed to change.
Here's what I've started doing differently in my hair care routine:
Disclaimer: A lot of this probably seems pretty basic and common knowledge, but as someone who just started caring about her hair - it’s been life changing for me. :)
Washing Order: I now wash my hair last in the shower to prevent body wash and face wash residues from affecting my freshly cleaned hair.
Shampoo Method: Opting for a gentle, non-fragranced shampoo, I ensure it reaches every inch of my scalp, especially the often neglected areas at the back and underneath. Massaging it in with a scalp brush ensures thorough cleansing and feels really nice. I take my time and add water if it needs more lathering.
3. Conditioning Method: I've increased the amount of conditioner I use to ensure every strand is nourished. Using a wide-tooth comb in the shower while the conditioner is still in my hair helps detangle without causing damage. The added bonus is that the conditioner is sitting on my strands longer and therefore is more effective. As I rinse, I use my fingers to comb through my hair.
4. Thorough Rinsing: Taking my time to rinse my hair thoroughly, paying extra attention to the bottom layers, has become a crucial step in my routine.
5. Weekly Treatments: Incorporating a clarifying shampoo once a week helps eliminate product buildup, while a hydrating hair mask restores softness and manageability.
6. Drying Method: I aim to blow dry or at least partially dry my hair before bed to avoid sleeping with soaking wet strands, which can lead to a tangled mess and potential mildew on my pillow.
7. Consistent Brushing: Brushing my hair before bed - no matter what - and before showering helps prevent tangling and distributes natural oils for healthier strands.
8. Styling Essentials: Embracing a blowout look with a blow-dry brush, I try to use dry shampoo very minimally, along with leave-in conditioner and heat protectant for added nourishment and protection.
By prioritizing proper hair care techniques, I've transformed my once unruly mane into something I'm proud of. For the first time in ages, I felt confident about my hair, receiving compliments that brought tears of joy. However, with these improvements, I've noticed my waves becoming straighter. I'm open to suggestions on how to maintain my beloved waves without sacrificing manageability.
